A distinct advantage to the harmonica is its size. It is also easy to learn to play. The harmonica does not need electricity like the electronic piano or the electronic keyboard and so can be played anywhere. This makes it a very popular instrument. The information contained in this article comes from well informed experts who are professional harmonica players.

It is also very affordable. You can purchase a harmonica for as little as a few dollars or you can pay a few hundred dollars. This instrument is also incredibly versatile. It is played by all manner of artists, especially country and folk singers.

It has other benefits as well. Children love the harmonica, and it can be used when telling stories. It is advantageous for children to learn the harmonica at a young age.

When learning to play the harmonica, it is good to know that no advanced skills are needed. There is no tuning involved as there is with a guitar. Simply take it out of the box and start playing. The key is always correct. It is easy to practice at any time of the day or night and there is no need to worry about the neighbours in the way that electric guitarists and drummers who practice at home have to do.

Like all people who are learning to play a musical instrument, there are amateurs and there are professionals. However, if you decide you just want to play at home for pleasure and to entertain the kids, you can. Alternatively, you can become professional. Either way, the harmonica will bring you years of enjoyment.

There are three basic choices with your harmonica, the diatonic and the chromatic are two. The diatonic can play only in one key and the chromatic plays all keys. The third choice is a standard, ten hole harmonica and is relatively inexpensive.

When you start to practice the harmonica try to blow one note. You can either ‘pucker’ or you can use the ‘tongue block’. One method is similar to blowing through a straw and the other blows through three holes and uses the tongue to block out the other notes.

The internet offers a number of tablatures or ‘tabs’, which is playing music without having to read the music. There is also the opportunity to buy lessons online where you only have to pay annually and they come with instruction booklets.

The humble harmonica has to be one of the easiest musical instruments to master in the world. Okay, so there are some great Folk and Blues musicians out there that can make this little mouth piece talk their language, but what I’m talking about here is for Joe Average, without a musical bone in his body, being able to knock out a melody in no time at all. What other instrument allows you to do that? You really can learn how to play the harmonica in a matter of days or weeks, depending on your commitment.

Most instruments require you get a beginners book, or if you’re really enthusiastic, a private tutor or perhaps joining a local class so that you can get a head start with your strumming, blowing, picking, or beating, depending what it is you’re trying to master. But with the pocked sized mouth organ, there’s no such learning curve. Just pick one up from your local music store and learn to play the harmonica your way.

I remember the time I purchased my first ever harmonica. It was back in the 1980’s when I was bumming my way around the world, that I struck a fascination with the sounds and notes that could be plucked from this musical mouthpiece. It all began when I came across this Danish couple who were journeying through Western Asia.

Tucked away in their backpacks were an Irish tin whistle and a tuppeny ha’penny harmonica. After dinner one evening, on the outskirts of the Chitwan jungle of Nepal, they began to entertain a small group of us happy hippies with their music. It was at this exact moment in time that I fell in love with, and made a decision to, learn to play the harmonica.

It was some weeks later before I found a place to purchase one. Funnily enough, there’s not a lot of call for music stores in the foot hills of the Himalayas or along the swamps of India, so it wasn’t until I’d landed in Georgetown, on the Malaysian island of Penang, that I found a rickety little shop that had harmonicas on sale for a mere two dollars a piece. I could hardly wait to get started, and so rushed off excitedly to my grimy guest house where I began to lean to play my new toy.

It proved to be a great companion on my travels. The first tune I knocked out was the Christmas carol ‘Silent Night’. Well it was December! But soon afterwards I was doing impressive little instrumentals and jamming sessions with fellow travelers who were trudging the circuit with bulky guitars strapped to their backs.

Whether you’re planning a long trip, or just looking for something to do outside the virtual world of a computer, then why not learn to play the harmonica? It’ll give you heaps of fun without the frustration that comes with more serious musical instruments. Hey, who knows where it could lead you Mr. Dylan!

If you really get a knack for the hand harp, you could then progress onto to say Chicago Blues, Country, Bluegrass, Folk, or even some unique style of your own. Good luck!

Ask any seasoned harp player what you need to master first before getting good at playing and most will tell you it is the art of playing single harmonica notes .

Ask any seasoned harp player what you need to master first before getting good at playing and most will tell you it is the art of playing single harmonica notes. Without this skill you will struggle to produce consistent and clear sounds necessary for correct interpretation of the tune you want to play.

Of course, much of harmonica play is based around chords but without this ability your versatility will be limited. Read on for some massive tips to quickly master playing the single notes.

1) When we talk about single notes we simply mean playing through an individual hole without creating a sound through the surrounding holes. Sounds easy right? In theory, yes.

But as the holes are so close together and, as you improve, your speed around the harmonica increases you will also increase the risk of playing other holes. So, to reduce this risk your first drill is to reduce the ’size’ of your mouth. By doing this you’re limiting the area through which air can be expelled.

This means that when you put your lips to the instrument you have a much greater chance of isolating one hole. Do this by using the same technique as you would when trying to whistle. You have now created a small hole in your mouth to blow through.

2) When playing single harmonica notes you want to ensure that you create a seal over the harmonica hole you are playing. This removes the possibility of loss of air as you play and is known to produce are far more pleasing sound.

You already have your lips in the whistle position – now, extend your lips out as far as you can without being uncomfortable. This set up will make sure that your lips are in the correct position when you place the harmonica to your mouth.

3) Bring the harmonica to your mouth so that your lips rest on the upper and lower casing. Your seal has been created and you should have a small blow hole. Adjust the harmonica so that you can play through one of the middle notes – these tend to be the easiest to play.

Blow gently from your belly and see if you can make a clear single note. If you get continued interference from other notes try adjusting your mouth so that the hole is even smaller. It is not a given that you will be able to do this right away so don’t worry if it takes a bit of time.

Practise this often and also introduce drawing air through single holes so that you are able to play all of the single notes available on the harmonica.

Playing single harmonica notes is key to your development. When this has been mastered your ability to learn will accelerate at a very quick rate. This is why it is so important to put the time in at the beginning to get this technique down.

Always wanted to learn to play harmonica but didn’t know where to start? Can’t read music but always wanted to be a musician?

Always wanted to learn to play harmonica but didn’t know where to start? Can’t read music but always wanted to be a musician? Haven’t got the money for an expensive instrument? The harmonica can answer all these problems and is very easy to pick up. Read on for some simple tips to get you well on your way.

1) Buy yourself a standard diatonic harmonica – make sure its in the key of C. Most players start with this as it is the most simple version to help you learn to play harmonica.

As you progress you may want to experiment with other types. You can also pick up harmonicas very cheap so no need to worry about heavy start up costs.

2) So you’ve got yourself a harmonica. Now what? Well, you need to hold it properly – no rocket science here.

Pick it up with your right hand as if you are picking up a burger. Make sure you don’t obstruct the air holes at the front and leave room for your lips at the back.

Use your other hand to hold the harmonica steady – press the palm of your hand against the side. Note that you don’t have to use your right hand to pick it up initially. If you prefer to use your left hand then do so.

3) It’s time to make some sweet music. Notes can be created by blowing through the holes and also by sucking air from the holes.

Each hole represents one note. Practise making a crisp single sound through each opening – tilt the harmonica slightly downwards and rest your upper lip a third of the way down the upper casing.

There is no need to put much effort into blowing to make a sound. When you are good at getting these notes out reverse the process so you can make a single note from each hole by sucking air in.

4) By now you should be getting a good grasp of the basics. The next step when you learn to play harmonica is to put together a song.

The great thing about a harmonica is that you don’t have to spend years learning to read music. All songs are laid out in a simple number format with an indication whether to suck in or blow out.

If you have a good ear for music you may be able to recreate simple songs yourself now that you know what sounds can be produced.

Killer mistake – moving your mouth across the harmonica as you play a song. Use your hands to move the instrument from side to side – this is where your burger grip comes into play. When you improve this and know where your notes are, you are well on your way.

5) Practise. Practise. And Practise some more. Of course it goes without saying but as this is a simple instrument you will see results very quickly indeed. That’s when you will really start to learn to play harmonica well.
